Television Programmes interacting with Audiences...

One of our tasks within Contemporary Media Issues was to create a character who would have their own age, gender, likes and dislikes and come across as though they are a real person. Nowadays this happens with characters in soap operas, they speak to their audience online. Furthermore they answer any questions the audience might have, or give them advice and guidance. This converges the whole narrative to another platform which enables the audience to become more engaged as well as loyal to the television programme.

I looked specifically at how The Only Way is Essex, known as the acronym TOWIE. TOWIE characters use social networking to interact with their audience as though they are not just characters on the television but they are real people.

Sam from TOWIE tweets on Twitter about the programme itself as well as tweeting her boyfriend "Joey Essex" who is also in the programme. Therefore, the audience can find out more information through the twitter page. Furthermore the character along with the narrative becomes more believable.

Joey Essex appeared in a picture with one of his fans who tweeted the image, furthermore Joey retweeted his fan. This creates a friendship with his audience as well as  the audience feeling a part of the programme, which will ultimately keep them watching.

The Only Way Is Essex also has their own website which illustrates the latest news about TOWIE along with enabling the audience to be able to watch previous episodes of TOWIE. Furthermore a new consumer could still catch up on TOWIE and be just as knowledgeable as a TOWIE fan, by using the website. Therefore by using a variety of multimedia platforms, the audience are becoming more engaged with the programme, as it becomes more real-life.
