Work Experience
During my work experience I am going to be working for CW Publishing Company. CW initialism, Citroen Wolf the surnames of the founders of the company; Dean Citroen and Oren Wolf.
The publishing company international based in both London and New York.
I am overwhelmed to have an opportunity working with the Creative, Media department, team. Furthermore I want to be able to use the skills which I have learnt through my education to put in to practice in "the real world" of business.
For the work experience I will be staying in London and commuting via trains and tubes, I cannot wait to have the experience of working for the company as well as living in London too.
Wish me luck.
THE FIRST DAY!! 27.05.2014
Excited but very nervous...
CW Publishing Offices were surprisingly easy to find, only one stop on the tube from ST Pancaras Train Station to Angel, additionally a one minute walk from Angel Underground to the offices. Once I got there I was introduced to all the members of staff, who were really friendly and helpful. Andy Roberts (Head of Publishing) gave me an overview of the company, explaining what it is about along with everyone's roles within the business and the schedule that they run by. Meanwhile, he also showed me the planning of the publications which they use to refer to the articles and the advertisements. This would be easy to use when putting the publication together as well as editing.
Tasks:
1. The company had created a publication which was not in order, therefore I had to use the publication planning sheet (implementation) to put the publication in order as well as including the advertisements too. Furthermore by doing this I will be more familiar with the publication planning sheet, and how it works effectively with the real print based publication. Next I had to add to a implementation using InDesign, by adding new section breaks, changing the page numbers. By doing this I could add more pages in to an implementation as well as being familiar with InDesign.
2. Andy also explained how proof reading is extremely crucial within the business, and Sharon (managing editor) explained how she always prints a copy out rather than read on the computer as she feels its more intimate and you concentrate purely on that single documentation. Andy gave me one of the articles they used in a previous publication which had errors involved, missing words/paragraphs and other errors, my job was to proof read the document effectively to correct the errors made.
3. I then worked with the Graphic Designer Steve who wanted me to resize images from a previous publication for the online presence of the publication. Furthermore I used Adobe Photoshop to do this, creating a new folder, with effective file names to reflect the article titles as this would be easier for them to refer back to when importing them on to the website. Meanwhile, there were a variety of images to choose from, which meant that I had to make sure that the image suited the pixel size and created an effective look and feel for the website.
We also had a team meeting where the members of the team reported back to one another at the stages they were at, whether they had contacted clients/journalists along with adding what they also needed to do.
My first day went really well, I enjoyed meeting the staff, they made me feel welcome and helped me when I needed their assistance. I cannot wait for tomorrow!!
